Faculty Advising Resources

As an advisor, you will have students coming to you for many different reasons. This page is meant as a resource to you in meeting their needs. I have tried to arrange it in broad categories of advising. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. (pbirrell@darkwing.uoregon.edu, or 346-4932)

Psychology major requirements.

A checklist of requirements is available on the web, please see psychweb.uoregon.edu/Undergraduates/ug_handbook.htm#Requirements. Students can also pick up a copy of the checklist at the main office, or at the Peer Advising Office. The Peer Advisors are the best source of information on requirements. You might want students to stop by there first to pick up a checklist, before they come to your office. The peer advising page is here: http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~psypeers/.

If a student is a transfer student, and you need help in determining what requirements have been met, please send them to me and I will evaluate their transfer credit.

University Requirements.

Again, the peer advisors are a good source of information. Also, Academic Advising (http://advising.uoregon.edu/service.html) has information on requirements, petitioning, and special needs such as transfer students.

Career Counseling.

Although none of us are specialists in this, students often want to know about career options for them after their degree. The peer advisors often offer seminars on this topic, and you can look at the career center home page (http://uocareer.uoregon.edu/).

Practicum Credit.

Students in our department have the option of taking practicum (PSY 409) and research (PSY 401) for credit. Advisors grant the credit for the practicum credits. The practica for the psychology department can be found here Practicum. These sites have been evaluated and are approved for 409 credit--this means that 4 of these credits may be used as upper division psychology electives. If a practicum that a student is interested in is not on this list, the student has two options:

  1. To sign up for PSY 406--this will NOT count as upper division psychology credit.
  2. To have the practicum evaluated by me to include on the 409 list. I am glad to do this at any time!

Research Credit.

Interested students are invited to work as research assistants on projects needing help. See Research Credit for current listings. These are updated regularly, and students should be sent to the appropriate faculty member or graduate student.
